American College of Physicians (ACP): New Principles for Patient and Family Partnership in Care In a new position paper published on November 27, 2018 in Annals of Internal Medicine, ACP released a set of principles to solidify the role of patients and families in care plans. ACP cites increasing evidence that patient and family partnership in care can improve health outcomes, practice efficiency, and patient and professional satisfaction. Engaging Patients in Health Research The Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) published a special issue titled, Engaging Patients in Health Research: The Ontario Experience. Eighteen articles describe research projects in which researchers are partnering with patients, families, and communities. Topics include mental health, Indigenous health, pediatrics, geriatrics, and complex chronic conditions. What Does It Take to Increase Patient Engagement in Primary Care Settings? In the spring of 2017, Massachusetts Health Quality Partners (MHQP) and CRICO (the insurance program owned by the Harvard medical community) surveyed 412 Massachusetts primary care practices to better understand what they are doing to engage patients and families. Overall, the findings suggest that patient engagement programs are seen as desirable but are not well utilized. Read the article
