Resources and Opportunities

Supporting Trust and Autonomy for Every Birth

This article, "Effect of TeamBirth on Patient Trust and Autonomy During Childbirth in Oklahoma", is available online in the Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecological, and Neonatal Nursing. It describes a specific approach — a TeamBirth huddle at the bedside which includes nurses, staff, clinicians, birthing person and support person and its effect on patient trust and autonomy in decision-making during childbirth. The findings reported that the TeamBirth huddle had a positive impact which suggests that it has potential to improve equity, patient outcomes, and childbirth experiences. Access the article here.

Pediatric Bill of Rights

This article, "Society of Pediatric Nurses Pediatric Bill of Rights," published in 2025 in the Journal of Pediatric Nursing, presents an updated version of the pediatric Bill of Rights. It includes two versions — Bill of Rights for children and for families. It emphasizes the importance of making care respectful, patient- and family-centered, culturally sensitive, and emotionally supportive to foster respect, safety, and shared decision-making. Access the article here.

Exploring Perspectives of Families of Infants Receiving a Diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy or Designated as High Risk

The article, "Caregiver Perceptions of Communication About Early Cerebral Palsy or High-Risk Designation in Infants," published July 2025 in JAMA Network Open, describes a qualitative study exploring families' perspectives of receiving a diagnosis of cerebral palsy (CP) or designated as high risk for CP (HRCP). Findings reported that early diagnosis, clear and compassionate clinician communication, preparation for what to expect, and next steps to address CP and HRCP were considered to be helpful by families, although these were not always what all families consistently experienced. Remembering Dr. Lucian Leape

It is with great sadness that all of us at IPFCC honor the passing of Dr. Lucian Leape, a leader who leaves behind a powerful legacy in healthcare safety and quality improvement. Dr. Leape was a formidable early champion for patient safety and for reducing preventable medical errors, pioneering efforts that profoundly shaped the field. He understood the importance of partnerships with patients and families. His crucial contributions extended to serving on a subcommittee instrumental in developing two seminal reports: "To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System" and "Crossing the Quality Chasm," which continue to guide healthcare transformation. He was the founder of the Lucian Leape Institute, established in 2007, which merged with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in 2017. His enduring influence and spirit will undoubtedly guide commitment to safe, effective, efficient, timely, patient-centered, and respectful care for generations to come.
