Betsy Lehman Center Releases New PFAC Onboarding Materials
Massachusetts is the only state that mandates that all hospitals have a PFAC. The Betsy Lehman Center serves as a hub for these PFACS, collecting mandated annual reports and sharing best practices to improve quality and safety. The Center has recently released a five-part series of one-minute videos and one pager highlights of the fundamentals and best practices of Patient and Family Advisory Councils (PFACs).

Family Stories: Caring for Children with Special Health Care Needs
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently launched Family Stories: Caring for Children with Special Health Care Needs, a new family video series developed in partnership with a family/caregiver workgroup. Each video highlights part of a family’s care journey, including the experiences, challenges, and resources they found helpful along the way.
Through these personal stories, families can find connection and support to help navigate their own care journey.

Pharmacy Leader Learning from Patients about Comprehensive Medication Management
The Pharmacy Quality Alliance (PQA) is a national quality organization committed to engaging patients, families, and communities as partners in its work in improving safe, effective and appropriate medication use. In a new blog series, it is featuring the perspectives of patients, caregivers, and patient advocates. In a recent blogpost, Brian J. Isetts, Professor Emeritus, University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy and a member of the new PQA Patient Advisory Council
describes the evolution of his understanding of patient and family roles in safe comprehensive medication management with implications for future practice.

New Guidebook to Help Organizations Advance Patient Empowerment
The Health Care Payment Learning & Action Network (HCPLAN) recently released a guidebook that describes the fundamental structures needed to support patient empowerment across the health care ecosystem. The recommendations are organized across a patient journey map, and are actions that engage and reach patients, equip them to act, and integrate systems to reduce burden and improve follow-through.

Community-Led Change for Older Adults: A Toolkit for Community Organizing
To empower communities to lead meaningful change for older adults, The Scan Foundation (TSF) commissioned the Community-Led Change for Older Adults: A Toolkit for Community Organizing.
Created with input from its Equity Community Organizing (ECO) Groups, the toolkit provides practical strategies, tools, and worksheets to help organizations and communities recruit, grow, and sustain community-led organizing efforts.
The toolkit includes lessons learned from the groups as well as more general community organizing guidance and links to useful online resources.
The structure of the toolkit follows the typical journey from early group development to action and sustainability.

Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) Partners with the City of Ottawa
Children’s Healthcare Canada recently shared information about the new partnership between CHEO and the city of Ottawa to improve support for children, youth, and families affected by housing insecurity. Evidence indicates that housing stability is fundamental to the health and well-being of children and families. This partnership will lead to greater collaboration between housing, health care, and community and social support and enhance families’ access to the support they need.

Centering What Matters: Aligning Action with Individual and Community Health Goals |
The National Academy of Medicine Commission on Investment Imperatives for a Healthy Nation was established to reimagine a U.S. health care system that puts people first.
NAM is releasing a series of discussion papers including the paper, Centering What Matters: Aligning Action with Individual and Community Health Goals.
A basic concept of this paper is: “Instead of being treated as active partners, individuals and communities are frequently viewed as passive recipients of health care, research, and public services, which neglects their expertise, experiences, and perspectives." There is a need for new processes, structures, and cultures that support deliberative and democratic decision making and recognition of the goals and priorities of individuals and communities health care is meant to serve.
